How to: Create a new connection for remote access to a Dial-up server.
Solution:
Use the 'Make New Connection' Wizard in 'Dial-Up Networking' and select the type of modem and Dial-up server.
1) Double-click the 'My Computer' icon on the Windows 95 desktop. (The 'My Computer' window appears.)

2) Double-click the 'Dial-Up Networking' folder icon. (The 'Dial-Up Networking' window appears.)

3) Double-click the 'Make New Connection' icon. (The 'Make New Connection' dialog box appears.)
4) Type the name of the Dial-Up Networking connection in the 'Type a name for the computer you are dialing' box.
5) Select your modem type from the 'Select a modem' drop-down list box.
6) (Optional) To configure the modem:
a) Click 'Configure...'. (The '<modem> Properties' dialog box appears, where <modem> is the name of the selected modem.)
b) In the 'Port' drop-down list, select the appropriate communication port.
c) In the 'Speaker volume' group, click and hold the slider to adjust the modem volume.
d) In the 'Maximum speed' drop-down list, select the desired modem speed.
NOTE: If you do not know the modem speed, refer to the modem owner's manual.
e) To set the connection preferences:
1] Click the 'Connection' tab. (The 'Connection' tabbed page appears.)
2] In the 'Data bits' drop-down list, select the appropriate data transmission size.
3] In the 'Parity' drop-down list, select the desired parity check settings.
4] In the 'Stop bits' drop-down list, select the desired number of stop bits.
5] To set the call preferences:
a] Select the 'Wait for the dial tone before dialing' check box.
b] To set the modem timeout, select the 'Cancel the call if not connected within' check box and type the number of seconds in the 'secs' box.
c] To set the idle disconnect settings, select the 'Disconnect a call if idle for more than' check box and type the desired time in the 'mins' box.
6] To set the port settings:
a] Click 'Port Settings...'. (The 'Advanced Port Settings' dialog box appears.)
b] Select the 'Use FIFO buffers (requires 16550 compatible UART)' check box to use the internal data buffer.
c] Click and hold the 'Receive Buffer' slider to adjust the data input buffer.
d] Click and hold the 'Transmit Buffer' slider to adjust the data output buffer.
e] Click 'OK' to close the 'Advanced Port Settings' dialog box. (The '<modem> Properties' dialog box appears.)
7] To set the advanced modem settings:
a] Click 'Advanced...'. (The 'Advanced Connection Settings' dialog box appears.)
b] Select the 'Use error control' check box and do one of the following:
1} Select the 'Required to connect' check box.
2} Select the 'Compress data' check box.
c] To set the data flow control settings.
1} Select the 'Use flow control' check box and do one of the following:
a} Select the 'Hardware (RTS/CTS)' check box.
b} Select the 'Software (XON/XOFF)' check box.
d] Select the desired modulation type from the drop-down list in the 'Modulation type' group.
e] (Optional) Type any extra modem settings in the 'Extra settings' box.
f] (Optional) Select the 'Record a log file' check box to record a log file.
g] Click 'OK' to close the 'Advanced Connection Settings' dialog box.
8] To set the Dial-Up Networking connection options:
a] Click the 'Options' tab. (The 'Options' tabbed page appears.)
b] In the 'Connection control' group, do one of the following:
1} Select the 'Bring up terminal window before dialog' check box.
2} Select the 'Bring up terminal window after dialing' check box.
c] To dial the computer connection manually, select the 'Operator assisted or manual dial check box.
d] If a calling card is used, type the number of second to wait for the credit card tone in the 'Wait for credit card tone' box.
9] To display the modem status, select the 'Display modem status' check box.
7) Click 'OK' to close the '<modem> Properties' dialog box (where <modem> is the name of the selected modem.
8) Click 'Next'.
9) Type the area code for the number being dialed in the 'Area code' drop-down list box.
10) Type the phone number being dialed in the 'Telephone number' box.
11) Select the country you are dialing from the 'Country code' drop-down list and click 'Next'.
12) Click 'Finish'. (The connection appears in the 'Dial-Up Networking' window.
13) (Optional) In the 'Dial-Up Networking' window, double-click the connection icon to connect to the remote server.
14) (Optional) To close the open windows:
a) In the 'Dial-Up Networking' window, select the 'File' menu and select 'Close'.
b) In the 'My Computer' window, select the 'File' menu and select 'Close'.
15) Click 'Finish'. (The connection will be saved in the Dial-Up Networking Window.
16) Double-click on the connection icon to connect to a remote server.
17) Once the connection has been set up, select the type of server to which to connect.
a) Select the connection icon created in steps 1) through 15).
b) Select the 'File' menu and select 'Properties'.
c) Click 'Server Type...'. (The 'Server Types' dialog box appears.)
Click 'Server Type'
d) Select the server protocol from the 'Type of Dial-Up Server' drop-down list box.
e) Select the advanced options:
1] (Optional) Click 'Log on to network' to log onto the network automatically using the user's current Windows password.
2] (Optional) If PPP was selected as a protocol, click 'TCP/IP Settings...' to connect to the Internet.
18) Click 'OK' twice to return to the 'Dial-Up Networking' window.
19) Double-click the connection object to connect to a remote server.
NOTE: Advanced options which are not available for a selected server protocol will be grayed out.
20) Click 'OK'.
